The internet promised freedom but delivered concentration. A handful of companies control how we communicate, shop, learn, and make decisions, while the laws and norms that protect freedom in the physical world don’t apply the same way online.
But a better course is possible. New technologies and robust legal frameworks can create a future where AI systems actually advance individual liberty instead of hindering it.
I’m the general counsel and head of policy at Imbue, where we’re building tools to give every person the power to shape their digital lives. I’ve spent years thinking about how the mechanisms of technological power differ from other forms of power and how societies can adapt to them.
From time to time I’ll explore this tension here. Some posts may dig into particular policy fights; others may zoom out to examine how digital spaces became lawless in the first place, and what reclaiming our freedom online actually requires.
